Sequim Picklers Update — April 16, 2022

President’s Report by Arvo Johnson, President, Sequim Picklers’ Board of Directors I am looking for two to three Sequim Picklers to serve on the Nominating Committee to help find our next Board of Directors.

Board elections are held every year in June to fill the roles of Board members whose terms have ended. The Committee assists the Board of Directors by preparing a slate of recommended nominees for director positions that become vacant. This year, we are looking for members willing to serve as President, Vice President, Treasurer, and Secretary. We are also looking for an Interim Membership Chair and an Interim Director of Court Operations to fill these important roles from September 1, 2022, through July 31, 2023.

In the event of a vacancy on the Board during the Nominating Committee’s one-year term, the Committee will also be asked to recommend members willing to fill that role until the position is up for re-election. The Board has final approval of the interim candidate.

Sequim Picklers exists because of you. Please consider taking on this important role. Contact me care of sequimpicklers@gmail.com (Subject Line: Nominating Committee). Thank you.

Picklers’ Membership Explodes! With the (almost) return of warmer weather and the popularity of Sequim Picklers’ Beginner’s Classes on Sunday afternoons, our Club is experiencing RECORD-HIGH GROWTH — 350 members, and counting!

Welcome to all the new members who have joined this past month. We look forward to seeing you on the courts at Carrie Blake Park!

P.S. Don’t forget to pick up your Name Tags, hanging just inside the shed door.

P.P.S. Current members, renew your membership by Tuesday, May 31

DOCO* Update (*Director of Court Operations)

Greetings Picklers, Seems like it is either too windy, cold, or rainy lately. Kind of a crazy springtime. We are trying our best to add back activities. Look on the Sequim Picklers Members-Only Forum Facebook site for last-minute changes due to weather.

Ladder Play Starts back up on Tuesdays at 5:30 p.m. All we need is enough players to participate and weather that will cooperate. Anyone can start Ladder Play. I will be training several players at the courts who want to learn how to set up Ladder Play, so it can happen whether I am there or not.

Major League Tournament I have around 25 signups for the Second Sequim Major League Tournament taking place on Saturday, May 14, starting at 8 a.m. Please let me know soon if you want to take part — it’s filling up fast. Email me at pickleballkendal@gmail.com (Subject Line: Major League).

Pickleball Clinic I am working on a big powerhouse pickleball clinic in July. More to come on this. But the cost will be $100 for members and $125 for nonmembers. It will be taught by Devon Schmidt from Edmonds, Washington. He is a pro that teaches with Tyson McGuffin. I am looking at the Lavender Festival weekend in mid-July.

New Rollers I bought new rollers to squeegee water off the courts. Please do not step on them. You do not need to remove the water from the rollers. For them to work, you need them wet. Please put the covers back on them when you are done, so the UV rays will not get to them. There is a notch in the covers that fits into the frame of the roller to keep it from rolling.

Court Operations Committee We have been meeting as a Pickleball Court Operations Committee (PCOC). The members are Daryl Ness, David Goose, Libby Hartman, Cris Gonzales, Bill Schiffman, Keith Murray, and myself. Contact any of these folks with concerns or suggestions relating to the courts or play.

Thanks. Kendal Wake, Director of Court Operations, USA-Pickleball Association

Pickleball Rules! By Kathryn (“K.T.”) Thomas, Registered Trainer of Referees and USA-Pickleball Association District Ambassador for the Pacific Northwest Coast

Question: We were playing on permanent courts when I returned a ball that hit the net post outside the sideline. The ball bounced onto the receiving court and the receiving team played it for a winner. I said it was outside the court when it hit the post and therefore was a dead ball before they hit it. They disagreed. My side lost the point either way, but who was right?

Answer: You were, although being “outside the court” was irrelevant. Rule 8.D. says that a ball in play that contacts a permanent object AFTER it bounces on the receiving team’s side is a fault against the receiving team, because they did not play the ball when it was “live.” Thus, the player on the opposing side who hit the ball wins the rally. These are not do-overs. But also note: Rule 7.J. says that, “After the serve, a ball contacting any permanent object BEFORE it has bounced on the receiving court” is a dead ball, and, therefore, a fault against the team that hit it.

A permanent object is any object on or near the court, including hanging over the court, that can interfere with play (Rule 3.A.24). This could include basketball nets, lighting fixtures, the ceiling, walls, net posts, seats for spectators, and all other objects around or above the court.

Paddles Up for Port Townsend Pickleball!

The Port Townsend Pickleball Club is hard at work, raising money to build permanent pickleball courts in their town.

Sequim Picklers has close ties with the Port Townsend Pickleball Club: — Club President Lynn Pierle has a bronze membership in Sequim Picklers. —Seven other Picklers belong to both our Club and PTPC.

The Club’s goal is to raise $35,000 to start construction. They’re 60 percent of the way there, but need help reaching their goal. If you would like to contribute, select this LINK.

For more information, contact Lynn Pierle at lynn.pierle@gmail.com (Subject Line: Capital Campaign).

Remember, when it comes to promoting our favorite game, we’re all in this together!
