Tournament Line-up for 2025

Announcing the 2025 Tournament Lineup

Your Tournament Committee has been hard at work exploring new ideas for our 2025 tournaments. Our goals have been to distinguish our events from the increasingly crowded lineup of tournaments throughout the region, decrease barriers to entry, and create more dynamism and excitement as brackets progress toward medal matches.

While no set of events will fully satisfy everyone’s desires, we believe the changes we are making to The Sequim Fling and The Blue Hole Bash, coupled with the existing Big Dill, Ladder Play, MiLP Challenge League, MiLP Draft and Go, and the Club Challenges (Bainbridge, Port Townsend, et al) will create an exciting lineup with a variety of activities for all interested players in 2025.

Sequim Fling: June 26 - 29, 2025

Next year’s Sequim Fling will become part of an eight-tournament qualifying circuit throughout the Greater Puget Sound Area leading to the Northwest Regional Minor League Pickleball (MiLP) Championships. Teams will consist of two men and two women and will be grouped by aggregate rating (total score of all four players’ ratings). We anticipate brackets ranging from an aggregate of 12 (average 3.0 per player) to 18 (4.5 per player) with open and senior (50+) divisions. The fact this is part of a qualifying circuit should draw many new players to the area and create a great deal of newfound interest in the tournament. For local players not interested in the broader circuit or the regional championship, it is not necessary to enter any other tournaments in the circuit in order to play in this one.

In addition to the MiLP events for The Fling, we will also be adding a Scramble format for both men and women. This format is similar to how we run The Big Dill in that players register as individuals – no partner required. In the preliminary rounds, players are randomly paired each game with another registrant in their pool (grouped by age, gender, and skill level) and they play doubles against another randomly paired team. Players gain points individually in the pool standings based on the outcome of each game. At the conclusion of the preliminary rounds, the field is cut based on those point standings. Of those remaining, players from the top half select an ongoing partner from the bottom half to compete together in a playoff bracket leading to the traditional gold, silver, and bronze medals for the respective teams. These will be scheduled so that players can compete in both a Scramble and MiLP event during the run of the tournament.

Blue Hole Bash: September 19 - 21, 2025

The Blue Hole Bash will look very similar to previous years with gendered doubles on Friday and Sunday and mixed doubles on Saturday. These will be organized by the typical age and skill brackets players are accustomed to. In order to differentiate this event and hopefully draw players that may otherwise not have an interest, we will also be offering singles. We will offer full-court singles for higher-skill and/or younger age brackets and skinny singles for others.

As a further differentiator, pending the outcome of a trial youth program this coming summer, we will also explore adding a youth bracket to this event. The age ranges and bracket groupings for this will be dependent upon enrollment, progress, and interest from participants in the youth pickleball program we are currently working to develop with the YMCA and the City of Sequim.

DUPR

As most of you know, PickleballBrackets.com is adopting DUPR as their standard player rating system going forward. To that end, historical tournament data from PickleballBrackets.com has already been imported into DUPR, so you likely already have a tournament-based DUPR rating even if you have not set one up.

Because of this, it will be important for each of you to properly set up and maintain your DUPR account to ensure accurate ratings going forward. If you have played in a tournament previously, click here to check for an established DUPR account in your name and claim it if you have not already done so. If there is no matching account or you have not previously played in a tournament, click here to create a new one if necessary.

If you’ve previously played in multiple tournaments and your registration details didn’t quite match (different email, for example), you may have multiple DUPR accounts. If you see more than one account in your name, please follow the instructions here to fix this issue. [PLEASE NOTE: Any of the preceding links will take you to your personal DUPR Dashboard if you are already logged in. If you want to check for duplicate accounts, etc., please log out and use those links once logged out.]

Previous versions of the DUPR rating algorithm had some flaws, but it is vastly improved in its current iteration. Each player now has a Rating and a Reliability Score (shown in a color-coded circle to the right of your rating). A Reliability Score above 60 means your rating should be a fairly accurate reflection of your abilities. A Reliability Score under 60 means the system needs more data to accurately assess your Rating. Because any match can be entered into DUPR (even recreational play, provided all four players validate the score), it’s up to you to provide more data for DUPR to accurately assess your Rating. If your Reliability Score is under 60 and you are not playing in any upcoming tournaments, we highly encourage you to find other registered DUPR players and begin entering scores from matches you are playing outside of tournament venues. Recreational scores are not weighted as heavily as tournament scores, so it will take more of them to influence your Reliability Score. Having a more reliable Rating will benefit you greatly next tournament season. You can read DUPR’s guide to improving your Reliability Score here.
